Law is fluid. It changes as the environment changes. Across many professions in South Africa and the world, continuing legal education has been mandated to ensure that professionals are aware of the evolution of law and the needs of their clients.
The law profession in South Africa is one of the last to adopt a requirement for CPD. The Legal Practice Act 28 of 2014 introduced the idea of continuing legal education as a necessary part of the revised framework although the requirement to achieve CPD points has yet to be regulated.
This is on the way, and it will have a positive impact on law professionals as the programmes are expected to cover both the law and business. In this environment, technology and digitisation will be an enabler. Online courses will provide flexibility and curated content that enables law firms, law professionals and graduates to increase their skills base, and employability, without affecting productivity.
